About midday yesterday the gardener at Ambo Station a middle-aged Chinaman named Jimmy Ah Yan, was found dead in his garden. It appears that last February  he was in the flood waters for several days near Uanda, and as the result of the exposure he developed a bad cough and completely lost the power of speech. Constable Sterne went out yesterday and found him lying on his blanket in the garden, having apparently died quietly. A sum of £l ls. was found under his head.

An inquiry was commenced before Mr. Cowan. J.P. at Ambo Station, and adjourned to Muttaburra.

Inspector J. J. Ahearne.
Died This Morning.
One of the oldest and most officiant officers of the Queensland Police Force in the person of Inspector John Ahearne, died at his residence, Bowen terrace, at an early hour this morning, at the age of 65 years.’
Inspector Ahearne joined the force in September, 1864, so that he has been 29 years in the service. For several years he was inspector in the Mitchell district, and did splendid work in putting down the crime of cattle and horse stealing which was of such common occurrence in the early days out west.
He was also in charge of the Muttaburra and Charleville districts, his services always being distinguished by zeal and energy. On May 1, 1890, he was appointed travelling inspector for the colony, the highest post in the force next to that of Commissioner of Police.
In about a year, he would have been entitled to retire on a substantial pension. It will be remembered that he took a prominent part in the late shearers’ strike.
Deceased was a brother-in-law of the Hon. A. J. Thynne and Mr. Justice Real. He leaves a widow and four children, the youngest being only a few months old. He had been very ill for several weeks, suffering from an abscess in the back, the result of a fall from his buggy while on duty some years ago.
The funeral takes place at 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon for the Toowong Cemetery, when there will doubtless be a large number of men both in and out of the force to follow the remains to their last resting place.

The Longreach Leader Friday 5 December 1947
OBITUARY MR. JOSEPH AHERN
The sudden death in the Longreach Base Hospital on Saturday last has removed from the Longreach and Muttaburra district a member of an old and most highly respected family, and one who, by his kindly nature endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. The late Mr. Ahern had not been in robust health for some time, and, taken ill at Inveresk, his home, during the week, suffered the rigours of an arduous trip in the rain to hospital.
Born in Longreach 42 years ago, and the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ahern of Thornton, Muttaburra and Brisbane, deceased received his secondary education at St. Joseph’s College, Nudgee, where he was an athlete, especially on the football field, of a high standard. After leaving Nudgee he joined his father and brothers in their pastoral pursuits in the Muttaburra district, acquiring in 1932 Inveresk, where he resided and which he managed in the interests of the family partnerships, till his last illness. A keen horseman in his younger days, he was a well-known amateur rider, well known on many Central and Northern courses, including Townsville. He was associated with his father and brothers also in several well known performers on western courses.
In 1919 he married Miss Olive Margaret Swanson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Swanson, Birracannia, Tangorin and she and one daughter, Marie, mourn his passing. He is also survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Ahern, Messrs. J. Ahern junr. (Avro, Dartmouth), W. Ahern (“The Telegraph,” Brisbane), T. Ahern Thornton, Muttaburra), and Mrs. P. Haseler (Bungoona, Muttaburra). A sister, Mrs T. Mc Kenzie, pre-deceased him a few years ago. A very largely attended funeral cortege paid its last respects at the Longreach cemetery on Sunday, Very Rev. Dean W. J. Mc Elhinney officiating.
