MUTTABURRA. March 28. With the death at his home, Muttaburra, on Wednesday morning of Mr. Ernest Edward Lake another of the early pioneers of the central western district has passed on. He had resided in Muttaburra for the past 52 years and had he lived would have celebrated his 86th birthday in October. Mr. Lake was proprietor of the Tattersall’s Hotel and Royal Hotel in the early days and later conducted a cordial factory, which he sold about 12 months prior to his death.
Mr. Lake was born in Hertford, England, and sailed to Australia in the S.S. Durham in 1871, and landed at Sandringham, Victoria. He married Miss K. Williams at Arrilalah, and finally settled at Muttaburra. He is survived by his widow, six daughters, Mesdames Rowan (Mackay) Bowen (Roma), Dunn (Bundaberg), Plumb (Barcaldlne), Hedgelong (Port Douglas), and Miss Mary Lake (Muttaburra), two sons, Messrs Ernest Lake (Brisbane) and George Lake (Muttaburra), 23 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. The funeral left All Saints’ Church of England at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Rev. R. Johnstone officiated at the graveside.
