John’s father was born in China.

A Fatal accident is reported in the Mail from Muttaburra, by which a young man named John Jair, 17 years of age, lost his life. The particulars of the affair go to show that deceased was riding down Bridge-street when the horse started to canter, and by some means the young fellow was thrown heavily on to his head. He was picked up insensible and taken home, where he died about twelve hours after the accident. An examination disclosed that deceased’s neck was dislocated and his skull fractured. What makes the affair more lamentable is the fact that Jair has been for some time the main support of his parents, his father being sick and unable to work.

[His Father] J. Jair died at Katandra last Saturday; he had been suffering a long time from asthma. He leaves a wife and four children in Muttaburra. His son, it will be remembered, died a few weeks ago from the effect of a fall from a horse.
